An original 1960s ladies walking coat made by 'Grenfell' and in very good condition.
Grenfell are a well known British brand who made high quality outerwear during the second half of the 20th Century. Grenfell used their own cloth for the outer shells of the coats which is known as 'Grenfell Cloth' and is a densely-woven cotton gabardine material used to make luxury and outdoor clothing since its creation in 1923. It has excellent windproof and waterproof qualities which led to them being a popular brand.
The coat is cut in a simple, almost utilitarian manner. It features two main flapped pockets to the lower portion of the jacket and a smaller, similar ticket pocket above the right hand pocket. Small tabs can be found to the cuff and to the rear to adjust the coat and fasten with mottle green-black coloured buttons. The front of the coat fastens with a metal 'Aero' brand zipper which is typical of the era.
Inside the coat the original label is still present and features the classic Grenfell design. 'By Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen Manufacturers of Grenfell Cloth Haythornthwaite & Sons Ltd. Made in England'. The Royal crest of arms is present to the top of the label as is the registered trademark logo which dates this to post - 1962.
The coat will suit around a 36" chest depending on desire fit and when laid flat measures -
Chest - 22"
Inside arm - 16 1/2"
Outside arm - 22 1/2"
Length - 27"
Shoulders - 17 1/4"
The coat is in good condition with only minor signs of age and wear. There is some soiling to the inside of the collar and a small amount of stitching has come away under one of the arms although this has not caused a hole. Overall the coat is in nice condition and is very wearable.
