An original men's coat which was made by 'Grenfell' during the 1960s.
Grenfell are a well known British brand who made high quality outerwear during the second half of the 20th Century. Grenfell used their own cloth for the outer shells of the coats which is known as 'Grenfell Cloth' which is a densely-woven cotton gabardine material used to make luxury and outdoor clothing since its creation in 1923. It is very similar to ventile and has excellent windproof and waterproof qualities which led to them being a popular brand.
This jacket is one of the most famous designs made by Grenfell and is known as 'The Shooter'. It was first produced in the 1940s as a jacket which could be used for shooting but was also smart enough to wear into town. It is made from a green coloured cotton and features a button up front. It features a patch pocket to the chest whilst to the skirt are two bellows pockets, all of which fasten with buttons. Rifle patches are located to the shoulders and there are metal grommets fitted to each arm pit to allow for ventilation. The jacket comes complete with its matching waist belt which fastens with a single prong metal buckle.
Inside the coat there is a hanging loop to the neck and an interior pocket at the chest. The skirt features a large 'poachers' pocket which fastens with buttons. The original label is also still present and features the classic Grenfell graphics along with the Royal Appointment and the words 'Made in England'. Below this is a small size label which reads '44'.
The jacket is intended to fit a 44" chest and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 25"
Inside arm - 16 1/2"
Outside arm - 24 1/4"
Shoulders - 19 1/4"
Length at back - 30"
The jacket is in good condition with only limited signs of wear and age. Overall it displays very well with no serious flaws or signs of undue wear. It is still a very wearable jacket but please bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
