An original 1950s wool flannel collarless shirt by 'Somax'.
This shirt is typical of those made and worn during the 1930s and 1940s as well as in the 1950s to a lesser degree. It is made from an white coloured wool which has a classic blue and black pinstripe running through it. This exact cloth and colourway was also used by 'Monument' in the 1940s. The shirt is of half placket design which is pulled on over the head. This design was prevalent from the Victorian period through to the 1950s when full button front shirts started to gain popularity. The shirt features a barrel cuff which fastens with a button.
These shirts are often described as 'double front' as the upper portion of the shirt features two layers of wool making for a very warm shirt!
The collar is a neckband style and made from the same material used for the body of the shirt. It is designed to be worn with a detachable collar but can also be worn without one. Below this the original label is still present to the interior which features typical period graphics. The maker's name of 'Somax' is present as are the words 'Made in England'.
The shirt is a medium size and when laid flat measures -
Chest - 25"
Inside arm - 20"
Outside arm - 21 1/2"
Shoulders - 19 1/2"
Length at front - 30"
Length at back - 32 1/2"
Collar - 16 1/2"
It is important to remember that these shirts are cut very wide across the chest to allow them to be pulled on over the head so the true fit will be much smaller than the measurement provided.
The shirt is in reasonable condition and is still very wearable. There is some limited staining with a couple of rust spots and some damage to one armpit as detailed in picture 4. These flaws have been reflected in the price of what is still a great looking and wearable shirt. It is a vintage, pre-worn shirt of course so may have other small issues commensurate with age so please take time to study the pictures.
An original period shirt with a great label!
