An original General Post Office workers jacket dating from the 1950s.
This pattern of jacket was worn during the 1930s and well into the 1950s with the pattern remaining virtually unchanged. Like the matching waistcoat and trousers it was worn with, the jacket is made from a dark navy blue coloured wool serge which was a popular material for workwear during this period. It features a three button single breast front which fastens with black plastic buttons. Red piping runs around the facing of the jacket and there are two more lines which create a French cuff to the bottom of each sleeve. A printed GPO badge has been fitted to the left breast which is a nice period addition.
Inside the jacket is fully lined and features a hanging loop to the neck. The General Post Office stamp is present to the interior and features a Queen's crown which dates this to being made after 1953.
The jacket is cut in a typical mid 20th Century way as it does not feature a rear vent and is cut short in the body. It will suit around a 35" chest and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 19 1/2"
Inside arm - 19"
Outside arm - 25"
Shoulders - 17"
Length at back - 30 1/2"
The jacket is in good condition for its age with some signs of wear and use. There is a small hole to the left front of the skirt and some light damage to the left cuff which is illustrated in picture 5 although this is only noticeable under close scrutiny. Overall it displays well and is totally wearable but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
