A nice original 1940s men's overcoat in a striking brown Prince of Wales checked wool made by 'Geo Wilde'.
This overcoat is so typical of the 1940s. It is made from a heavy blanket wool and features a double breasted closure, large patch pockets to the front and a waist belt. The interior of the coat is lined with rayon and features two interior pockets. One of these houses the original label which bears the makers name of 'Geo Wilde ltd' and the address of 43 King Street, Hammersmith. The original owner's name has been added in ink and reads 'G. W. Cooke esq'. The date is also written in the same hand as 13/9/47.
These coats are designed to be worn as an outer layer over a suit and are cut in a loose fashion to allow for movement. The coat will most likely suit a 38-40" chest and when laid flat measures -
Chest - 24"
Inside arm - 17 3/4"
Outside arm - 27"
Shoulders - 19 1/2"
Length - 41"
The coat is in good usable condition and is still very wearable. It does show signs of wear and has had leather cuffs added to the end of each sleeve which appear to be a period addition. There is also wear to the end of the waist belt and to the lining around the collar but this is only noticeable under close scrutiny. Overall the coat displays well but please study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which is over 70 years old.
All in all a great coat which is very striking and typical of the period. This would make a great addition to any winter wardrobe!
