An original pair of women's windproof golf trousers made by 'Swallow' in the 1940s.
These trousers are designed to be worn as an over-trouser, specifically for when playing golf. They are typical of windproof items of the period as they are made from a tightly woven cotton gabardine fabric which has good windproof and waterproof qualities. The trousers feature two layers of material to further help proof them against the elements.
The trousers feature an elastic section to the rear and small pleats to the front. They also have a side buttoning closure which is typical of women's wear from this period. As well as this they feature a rear pocket and an open gusset to the crotch.
Inside the trousers the original label is still present and bears the maker's name of 'Swallow' as well as the slogan 'Fine in the rain Golfwear'. As is often found on the label from this brand there is a graphic of a swallow. This brand was a prolific maker of raincoats in the mid-century period and other examples of their labels can be found on my website.
Due to having an elasticated waist the trousers will fit a number of waist sizes. When laid flat they measure -
Waist - 13 1/2" (16 1/2" fully stretched)
Rise - 16"
Rear rise - 17 1/2"
Inside leg - 29"
Outside leg - 41 1/2"
Cuff - 10"
The trousers are in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. There are only limited signs of wear and use and there is some minor staining. The cuffs show some alteration but this does not overly detract from the item. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that these are a vintage, pre-worn pair of trousers.
A fantastic piece of early outwear with a great label!
