An original pair of workwear bib and brace overalls which were made in France during the 1940s.
This style of overalls are often referred to as 'carpenter' overalls or dungarees and have been a popular alternative to full overalls for many, many decades. The exposed 'bib' top allows for much more free movement than standard overalls and are sometimes worn teamed with an engineer or chore jacket to cover the exposed clothing underneath.
These overalls are made from a khaki coloured cotton canvas which is a heavy wearing material which is ideally suited to workwear clothing. The top of the overalls is supported by elastic straps which adjust with metal buckles to the front. The sides can be fastened in two different positions with metal riveted donut style buttons and there is a patch pocket to the front of the bib. Two more pockets are located to the front of the hips and there is a fly which also fastens with buttons. To the rear there is evidence of where a patch pocket was previously fitted and there is a spanner pocket to the side of the right leg. There are also buttons to which the shoulder straps are fastened.
Inside the overalls the original maker's label is still present and it bears typical graphics from the period. It bears the maker's name of 'A. J. Michel' and the words 'Marque Deposee' in gold against a black field.
The overalls are a medium size and when laid flat they measure -

The condition of the overalls is apparent in the pictures. They are heavily worn with staining, fraying and various other flaws. The elastic in the straps has lost elasticity and there are period repairs. These flaws are illustrated in the pictures and reflected in the price. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that they are a vintage workwear item which have various flaws commensurate with age.
Whilst very heavily used, these are an original 1940s items with loads of character and a great period label and other details such as buttons.
