An original 1920s wool flannel collarless shirt made in France which is in good condition.
This shirt is typical of those made and worn during the 1920s. It is made from a white coloured wool which has an intricate striped pattern running through it. The shirt is of half placket design which is pulled on over the head. This design was prevalent from the Victorian period through to the 1950s when full button front shirts started to gain popularity. The shirt features a barrel cuff which fastens with a button and a neckband collar. This can be worn as is or can be fitted with a detachable collar with the use of collar studs. The original owner has had his initials added to the bottom of the bib which read 'J. B.'
The shirt is a large size which will suit around a 42" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures -
Chest - 25"
Inside arm - 20 1/4"
Outside arm - 21 1/2"
Shoulders - 19 1/2"
Length at back - 39 1/2"
Collar - 16"
It is important to remember that these shirts are cut very wide across the chest to allow them to be pulled on over the head so the true fit will be much smaller than the measurement provided.
The shirt is in good condition and is still very wearable. There are no serious flaws but some signs of wear and use. There is a mark to the rear of the shoulder as illustrated in picture 9. This is a vintage, pre-worn shirt so may have other small issues commensurate with age, so please take time to study the pictures.
An original period shirt in a harder to find size.
