An original 1920s wool flannel collarless shirt made in France which is in good condition.
This shirt is typical of those made and worn during the 1920s. It is made from an off-white coloured wool which has an intricate striped pattern running through it. The shirt is of half placket design which is pulled on over the head. This design was prevalent from the Victorian period through to the 1950s when full button front shirts started to gain popularity. The shirt features a barrel cuff which fastens with a button and a neckband collar. This can be worn as is or can be fitted with a detachable collar with the use of collar studs. There is also a small tab below the placket which allows the shirt to be fastened to the trousers.
The shirt is a medium size which will suit around a 40" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures -
Chest - 24"
Inside arm - 23 1/4"
Outside arm - 24"
Shoulders - 19 1/4"
Length at back - 43 1/2"
Collar - 17"
It is important to remember that these shirts are cut very wide across the chest to allow them to be pulled on over the head so the true fit will be much smaller than the measurement provided.
The shirt is in good condition and is still very wearable. There are no serious flaws but some signs of wear and use including some excellent period darns to the inside of the cuffs and another to the front. This is a vintage, pre-worn shirt so may have other small issues commensurate with age, so please take time to study the pictures.
An original period shirt with some great details.
