A rare original British made leather motoring coat which dates from the 1920s.
This coat is typical of the inter-war period. This style has become iconic and is instantly recognisable today. These coats were favoured by aviators and motorists and have some features which are designed specifically for use in those situations, such as the angled map pocket at the chest.
The coat is made from a thick, brown coloured leather and features a double breasted front which fastens with leather 'football' style buttons - some of which are period replacements. Two flapped pockets are located to the skirt and fasten with brass press studs. The interior of the pockets is lined with a cotton whipcord material which is heavily worn and damaged. There is also an angled map pocket located to the chest which again fastens with press studs. As well as this the is a storm flap to the right shoulder which is another nice detail.
The interior of the jacket is fully lined in cotton and features an interior pocket as well as a securing strap at the waist. There is also a leather hanging loop at the neck.
The coat is designed to fit a 38" chest and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 22"
Inside arm - 17 1/2"
Outside arm - 26 1/2"
Shoulders - 19 1/4"
Length at back - 48"
The coat is in a heavily worn, distressed state and is therefore sold as a reference or display item and not for wearing. There are numerous flaws and signs of age and wear along with some damage etc. This is reflected in the price and illustrated in the pictures. Please take time to study these before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
A rare and iconic piece of clothing!
