An incredible original United States Army five button sweater dating from the Second World War.
This jumper was found along with a similar example in the American sector of Normandy recently. It was clearly obtained by a French civilian during 1944 and worn for many years as is evident by the many fantastic darned repairs.
This pattern of jumper was produced throughout WW2. It is made from a olive drab coloured wool which is machine knitted. It features a five button opening at the neck and a small collar. Some of the buttons buttons have been replaced with period French examples which have been added when the original US buttons have fallen off or broken. There are numerous darns to the jumper which are all typical of French workwear items from this period and are very beautiful. Of particular note is the large area on the right sleeve which is really special.
The original label is no longer present but the jumper will suit a 36" chest. When laid flat it measures -
Chest - 19"
Inside arm - 19"
Outside arm - 21"
Shoulders - 18 3/4"
Length - 22"
The jumper is in well worn condition but displays well and looks to still be very wearable. Aside from the obvious repairs there are some small holes to the rear of the jumper as illustrated in picture 8. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-owned item with some small flaws commensurate with age.
A stunning original piece of WW2 uniform which has been utilised by a civilian as workwear.
