An original men's wool duffle coat which was made by 'Clares Workwear' in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

This style of coat was first used by the Royal Navy during the Second World War. The design was extremely popular leading to them becoming a popular coat in the post-war years with civilians. Whilst some people bought ex-military examples from army surplus or similar, many bought them new from private manufacturers.

This example is made from a navy blue coloured wool and features four toggles to fasten the front which is a typical feature found on duffle coats. The reinforced shoulder section, patch pockets and hood are also more classic features found on this style of coat. The hood features a small throat latch which fastens with a single button either across the throat or folded back onto itself.

Inside the coat the original label is still present and features typical period graphics. It bears the maker's name of 'Clares Workwear' along with the style of 'Donkey Jacket' which is curious as it is not a donkey jacket! It also states that it was made in Great Britain and is a size large.

When laid flat the coat measures -

Chest - 24 1/2"
Inside arm - 18"
Outside arm - 24 1/2"
Shoulders - 20"
Length at rear - 39 1/2"

The coat is in good condition with only limited signs of wear and age. Overall it displays well and is totally wearable. Please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice original coat with some classic details.
