An original men's double breasted rain coat which was made by Burton during the 1950s.

This style of raincoat was first worn by officers of the British Army during the Great War. They became popular with civilians in the inter-war period and are now an iconic piece of clothing which is instantly recognisable. This example was made in the 1950s from a gabardine wool mix which is typical of coats from this period. It features a double breasted front which fastens with buttons and has a waist belt made from matching material. It fastens with a leather covered metal single prong belt buckle and features metal Dee rings - a detail carried over from military raincoats from previous decades. Epaulettes are fitted to each shoulder and belts are present to each cuff which can be fastened with a small leather covered buckle.

Inside the coat there is a rayon liner which is typical of the era. The original throat latch is still present and there is a hanging loop to the neck. Below this the original label is present and bears the maker's name of 'Burton'

The coat is a larger size which will suit around a 42" - 44" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 25 1/2"
Inside arm - 17 1/2"
Outside arm - 26 3/4"
Shoulders - 19 3/4"
Length - 49"

The coat is in good condition with no serious flaws or damage. There are some signs of wear and use but nothing undue and the coat is still very wearable. There are a couple of very small moth nips to the bottom of the skirt which are illustrated in picture 7. Overall it displays very well but is a vintage item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice original example of a men's raincoat from the 1950s with a classic label.
