Original 1970s British Military Duffle Coat - Size 3

Original 1970s British Military Duffle Coat - Size 3

Code: 55172

An original size 3 Royal Navy Duffle Coat dating from the 1970s which is in very good condition.

This pattern of coat was introduced during the Second World War. It replaced the earlier version which had brass pop studs around the hood. This was done as an economy measure and was left unchanged post-war. These coats stayed in production for many years and were still being produced in the late 1970s for the British military. This is one such coat but aside from the label, they are very hard to tell apart from a wartime made coat.

The coat is made from a thick, heavy camel hair wool which was employed due to being warm and hard wearing. The coat fastens with four wooden toggles to the front and features tabs which fasten with white coloured plastic buttons at the wrists. There is also a hood which features a cotton drill tape which is fitted inside the front edge and buttons to the inside of the coat. It has a number of positions meaning the wearer can pull the hood down tightly onto their head.

Inside the coat the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the title 'Coat, Duffel, Drab (With Hood Attached) and bears the maker's name of Remploy Ltd'. The size is stated as 3 and the A78 contract number is present which dates the coat to the 1970s. As well as this it bears the contract number of 22G/8405-99-127-0971.

The coat is designed to fit a 42" to 44" chest but they are however cut in a wide, loose manner to allow them to be worn as an outer layer over a uniform. Due to this it is possible that the coat will fit larger chest sizes. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 29 1/2"
Inside arm - 20"
Outside arm - 25 1/2"
Shoulders - 22"
Length - 45"

On the whole the coat is in very good condition with only very limited signs of wear and use. These coats are often heavily worn but this example is very clean overall and displays very well. It is totally wearable but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice example of this design classic in great condition. Own the original!
