An original pair of British Royal Navy tropical shorts dating from the 1950s.
The Royal Navy started producing navy blue coloured shorts and trousers as part of the Action Working Dress uniform which was introduced at the tail of the Second World War. The shorts are made from an indigo blue coloured cotton drill material and feature a twin pleated front and slash pockets. The fly fastens with black coloured buttons and there are waist adjusters to each hip which are joined by a section of elastic.
Inside the shorts the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the title of 'Shorts, Blue Drill, Tropical N.P' and the vocab number 24432. The size is stated as No. A3 34" waist although they fit smaller than this. Due to the waist being adjustable so will fit a 30" - 31" waist and when laid flat they measure -
Waist - 15 1/4"
Rise - 15 1/2"
Rear rise - 17 1/2"
Inside leg - 2 1/2"
Outside leg - 16"
Cuff - 13 1/2"
The shorts are in good condition with some signs of wear and use. They are still very wearable with no serious flaws but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that they are a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
A hard to find pair of mid-century shorts with a nice clear label.
