An original Royal Navy Physical Training sports shirt dating from the Second World War.
This style of shirt was popular during the 1930s and 1940s and was worn for sports such as Football and Rugby. The style would now be referred to as a 'rugby shirt' and the basis of modern examples can clearly be seen in this early shirt. It is made from wool cotton and features a white cotton collar and cotton tape opening, typical of shirts from this period. It is cut wide and square across the chest and shoulders with narrow arm openings which again is derguire for the time. The long sleeves feature cuffs to the end.
There are no manufacturers or date markings but there are some markings to the body of the shirt including the original owner's name 'B. Clode' to the rear.
When laid flat the shirt measures -
Chest - 19 1/2"
Inside arm - 23"
Outside arm - 23"
Shoulders - 21"
The shirt is in worn condition with various stains from use and storage. Please study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item that has flaws commensurate with age.
A classic piece of early British sportswear!
