An original Royal Navy Action Working Dress Shirt dating from the 1940s.
This pattern of shirt was introduced in 1945 and saw limited issue at the end of the Second World War. It was worn with the dark blue coloured Action Working Dress Trousers which were clearly based on the US Navy chambray shirt and dungarees. This dress became the standard working dress in the post-war period and was often referred to as No.8 Dress.
The shirt is made from a sky blue coloured cotton twill and features a full button front which was very modern for the British military at this point! Two breast pockets are located at the chest and fasten with black plastic buttons as does the front and the cuff.
The shirt features a number of period repairs which give the shirt real character. The collar has been very neatly repaired and has the bottom of one of the breast pockets. There is also a repair to the right shoulder. All of these are detailed in the pictures.
The shirt is a smaller size which will suit someone of around a 34-36" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -
Chest - 20"
Inside arm - 19"
Outside arm - 21 1/2"
Shoulders - 17 1/4"
Length - 31"
Collar - 15"
The shirt is in well worn condition with various repairs, stains and signs of age and use. There is wear to the top of the right sleeve and the seam has come away under the arm too. This is a far from perfect example which is reflected in the price. Please study the pictures carefully before purchasing.
A rare Royal Navy work shirt with some lovely period repairs. You'll never find another the same as this!
