Original 1970 Dated RAF MK1a 'Bone Dome' Flying Helmet

SOLD

An original RAF MK 1A Bonedome Flying Helmet Dated 1970.

The MK 1A Flying Helmet replaced the earlier and short lived MK1 'Bonedome' which came into issue during the 1950s as part of the 'Fast Jet Pilot System'. The helmet has been over painted an olive green colour as many of these helmets were in the 1970s. Its original silver paint finish can be seen in some areas where the olive colour has come away. The helmet features a moveable tinted visor which is maker marked with the RAF stores code 22c/1252987. This runs on a rail on the top of the helmet which is marked 'Visor Flying MK2 Medium Helmets LTd BPLE' which would suggest that the helmet is a medium size. The date is also marked as 10 - 1970 which can be seen in picture 6.

Inside the helmet retains its original white webbing harness which features a maker's name. Underneath this is the remnants of where the original label would have been when new. Various owners have added their names in ink to the interior which may offer scope for further research.

The helmet is in reasonable condition with various signs of wear and use. Please study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

Overall a good example of this pattern of helmet with an authentic period refinished paint scheme.
