An original 1951 dated British Army Officers Khaki holdall grip bag complete with its original 'DOT' brand zipper.
This pattern of bag features amongst the kit taken by some pilots of the Second Tactical Air Force when they flew into Normandy and can be seen in original period photographs.
This style of canvas grip came into use during the Second World War and due to its great design and popularity was made for many years afterwards. This example is clearly dated 1951 but is identical to wartime examples. The stamp is inside the bag on the white base section and is stamped in ink along with the manufactures name 'J & A.H LTD'.
A period 'DOT' brand zipper has been used in the factory and works as it should. it is hollow in the middle to allow the brass ring at the end of the zip to pass through it. I padlock can the be fitted to keep the bag securely done up.
The overall condition of the bag is very good but there are a couple of floors. Some of the sticking on the leather reinforcing patches around the corners has come loose and in one corner there is a small hole through the canvas which goes into the bag. One of the leather handles has also had a length of string wrapped around it at some stage in its life to help keep the leather in place. These things add to the character of the bag in my opinion but the damage has been reflected in the price.
Overall a nice original mid century bag with bag of character and a nice original zip.
