An original Royal Air Force Irvin Flying jacket dating from the mid war period which is in good condition.

This jacket is most likely an 'Irvin Suit' jacket and dates from approximately 1943 to 1945, based on the construction. The jacket is made from small sections of leather bound together with seam tapes. This was introduced as an economy measure during the war to save on material.

The jacket features a chromed leather outer shell which is in good condition and retains a good amount of its original finish. A 'Lightning' branded zipper is fitted to the front and retains its leather puller which is secured with a brass rivet. The two sleeve zips are high quality reproductions supplied and fitted by Byson Leather in the U.K. who are the best company around for vintage flying jacket restoration. The large collar features chrome plated metal double 'dee' rings to the underside which allows the collar to be fastened around the wearer's neck. Under each arm are metal grommets which act as vent holes.

The interior of the jacket features a 'Devon Fleece' sheepskin which is long whilst the collar features the short style. The original metal hanging chain is present at the neck although it is broken.

The jacket will suit around a 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 22 1/2"
Inside arm - 21 1/2"
Outside arm - 24 1/2"
Shoulders - 20"
Length - 24"

The jacket is in good condition and displays well. There are no serious flaws or damage and all the zips function well. All the seams appear strong, the chromed leather retains most of its chrome finish with some small areas of crazing and the sheepskin is well intact and in good condition. Some of the chrome finish is missing in some areas as is evident in the pictures. Some panels also have small slits to the leather finish as illustrated in the last picture. There are not tears but small cracks to the finish. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.

A nice original early Second World War RAF flying jacket which is in nice condition and displays well.
