A very rare early example of a Gloverall made duffle coat which dates from the early 1950s.

Gloverall were founded in 1951 and quickly became the best known brand for duffle coats in the UK and dominated the market for the next few decades. This coat dates from the early 1950s and is therefore one of the earliest coats to be made by this company.

This style of coat was first used by the Royal Navy during the Second World War. The design was extremely popular leading to them becoming a popular coat in the post-war years with civilians. Whilst some people bought ex-military examples from army surplus or similar, many bought them new from private manufacturers, such as those made by Gloverall.

The coat is made from a soft, thick pile grey coloured wool and fastens with four toggles to the front. It features tabs which fasten at the wrists and two large patch pockets are located at the front of the coat. There is also a hood which is an interesting design which is best illustrated in picture 4. The hood is also adjustable on the inside which is a feature directly copied from the military issue coats. There is also a throat latch which fastens with buttons which is again illustrated in picture 4. The whole design is extremely close to the military examples it is based on.

The interior of the coat is lined with a blue, black and yellow checked wool which is typical of the period and creates a fantastic contrast. The original label is present to the neck and is typical of the early 1950s and is the first label Gloverall used in their civilian coats. It bears the maker's name along with the words 'Made in England'. There are two labels to the skirt which bear the words 'All Wool' as are often encountered on early 1950s British clothing items.

Like all duffle coats, the coat is cut in a loose manner to allow for free movement with other clothing underneath. It is however more closely cut than the military issue coats. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 27"
Inside arm - 17 1/2"
Outside arm - 26"
Shoulders - 20 1/2"
Length at rear - 42"

The coat is in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. It only shows limited signs of age and wear with no serious flaws or damage. Considering the coat is approximately 70 years old it displays very well and is totally wearable. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn coat.

A very nice example of classic piece of British outerwear which carries the prestigious Gloverall name.
