An original men's woollen undershirt made by 'Meridian' during the 1930s or 1940s which is a size 40" chest.
This shirt is typical of those made in the inter-war period and were worn by men from a variety of walks of life, as well as in the military. Whilst the Army, RAF and Royal Navy had issue vests like this, private purchase examples were often worn. They are all very similar in construction, almost identical, and were quite possibly made in the same factory.
The construction of the undershirt is typical of the period. It is made from an oatmeal coloured wool and is machine made. It features a round neck and a three button fastening which is a style often referred to as 'Henley' today. There is a waistband and the sleeves feature a tight cuff to secure the shirt to the wearers arm tightly.
Inside the shirt the original label is still present and bears the maker's name along with the words 'Made in England'. The size is marked as 40". When laid flat the shirt measures -
Chest - 20 1/2"
Shoulders - 21 1/2"
Length - 28 1/2"
The shirt is in good condition but does have a very small hole to the rear as illustrated in picture 5. It displays well but is a vintage item so please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that it is a pre-owned item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
