A rare original British Army Demob shirt dating from the 1940s which is in good condition.

All servicemen who served with the British Forces during the Second World War were eventually demobilised. Part of the 'demob' process involved acquiring a set of clothing including a suit, hat, shoes, tie and shirts. This shirt is a scarce example of one of these shirts as is evident by the markings found inside the collar.

The shirt itself is typical of the 1940s being made from cotton and cut in the standard half-placket design which is pulled on over the wearer's head. The shirt features a striking striped pattern of blues and white which is classic for the period. A neckband collar is present to which a detachable collar can be attached and the cuffs are french cuffs which are designed to be worn with cufflinks. Inside the neckband are the original markings which are typical of Demob shirts. The maker's initials or 'A.R' are present as is the collar size of 16.

The shirt is a medium size which will suit around a 40" chest. When laid flat measures -

Chest - 24"
Inside arm - 24"
Outside arm - 27"
Shoulders - 18 1/2"
Length at back - 37 1/2"

It is important to remember that the cuffs are the french cuff style worn folder back meaning that approximately 2 1/4" need to be subtracted from the sleeve length if worn correctly.

The shirt is in good condition with no signs of previous wear and use. There is some minor staining from storage which is evident in the pictures. The shirt displays well but is a vintage item which has small issues commensurate with age so please take time to study the picture before purchasing.

A rare piece of 1940s menswear which would make an excellent addition to any WW2 or vintage collection.
