An original Women's Voluntary Service cotton work dress which dates from the 1950s.

The WVS was formed in 1938 as part of the larger Civil Defence programme and served throughout the Second World War as well as in the post-war period. This work dress dates from the 1950s but is made from the same teal coloured cotton drill material used during WW2. It features a single breasted front which fastens with magenta coloured revolving shank buttons as were typically used on workwear during this period. They are held in place with metal split rings which make them removable for washing purposes. There are two patch pockets located to the front and the breast pocket sports a cloth embroidered WVS badge.

Inside the dress the original labels are still present including the sanforized shrunk label and the maker's label which bears the maker's name of 'Wright (Overalls) Ltd London'. There is another label which has been added by hand and reads WVS HQ TS Uniform Stock.

When laid flat the dress measures -

Bust - 19"
Waist - 19"
Hips - 21"
Inside arm - 17 1/2"
Outside arm - 22 1/2"
Shoulders - 15 3/4"
Length at rear - 41"

The dress is in good condition with some limited signs of wear and use. There are now serious flaws or damage and overall it displays well and looks to be wearable. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice original 1950s work dress with some great details.
