An original 1948 dated Fireman's Greatcoat which has been converted for civilian use, most likely in the 1950s.

This pattern of greatcoat was produced for the Fire Service from the 1940s through to the 1960s. It is typical of military greatcoats of the period being made from a thick serge blanket wool which is a dark grey/black colour. The coat features a double breasted front which fastens with replacement plastic buttons in place of the Fire Service examples. The coat has a peaked lapel which is typical of the period and features a half belt to the rear which has had its buttons removed and been stitched together. The coat has also been shortened from its original over-knee length to hip length.

Inside the coat the original label is still present and bears the title of 'Greatcoats Firemen F.S. 44C' below which is the size of 4 which is intended to fit a 38" - 40" chest. The maker's name of 'B. Bloom Ltd' is also present as is the 1948 date and the War Department broad arrow marking.

When laid flat the coat measures -

Chest - 23"
Inside arm - 17 1/4"
Outside arm - 25 1/2"
Shoulders - 18"
Length at rear - 34"

The coat is in well worn condition but is still totally wearable and has a great used look to it. The nap of the serge wool is well worn down giving it a shaved down look which exposes a fleck in the wool. The cuff of each sleeve is heavily worn as illustrated in the pictures. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice period converted coat with its original label intact.
