Original WW2 NAAFI Women's Work Dress

Original WW2 NAAFI Women's Work Dress

Code: 55604

SOLD

An original NAAFI workers dress which dates from the Second World War.

The Navy, Army and Air Force Institute was set up in 1920 to run recreational establishments for the British Armed Forces, and to sell goods to servicemen and their families. This body served all over the world during WW2 and formed an important part of the comfort and morale boosting side of the war effort.

The dress is made from a cream coloured cotton twill and features a fully buttoning front which fastens with revolving shank buttons. These were often used on workwear during this period and are removable for laundering purposes. A pocket is located to the chest and features the NAAFi logo and King's crown embroidered directly onto it in navy blue thread. The sleeves finish in a barrel cuff which also fastens with revolving shank buttons. Both the sleeves have been opened along the inside edge (one along the seam and the other next to the seam). This is as the dress was found and appears to have been done purposely - possibly to aid in rolling up the sleeves when working?

Inside the dress the original labels are still present. One bears the 'B.D.A. Rigmel Shrunk' label which is often encountered on 1940s workwear. Below this is a size label which states the size as 20. As well as this there is a care label.

When laid flat the dress measures -

Chest - 21"
Waist - 17"
Inside arm - 18"
Outside arm - 24"
Shoulders - 15 3/4"
Length at rear - 45"

The dress is in well worn condition and clearly saw plenty of use. There is staining, wear and some holes as well as the issue with the arm inseams. Overall it still displays well but please study the pictures carefully before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which has some flaws commensurate with age.

A rare original wartime workwear dress with some great details.
