A scarce original United States Navy Denim Shawl Collar Dungaree Jacket in fantastic worn condition.

The US Navy introduced denim clothing in 1901 with the first shawl collar jackets produced being a pullover type. In 1918 a full button front pattern was introduced and has since become an iconic piece of workwear. The jacket is made from a classic blue coloured denim and features metal US Navy buttons to the front which are held on with split rings. This allows them to be removed for laundering purposes. Two simple patch pockets are located to the front of the jacket which is indicative of the simple, utilitarian design. There are small stitched holes towards the bottom seam which allow the jacket to be hung up on deck to be dried (picture 4).

The jacket is a smaller size which will suit around a 38" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 21 1/2"
Inside arm - 19"
Outside arm - 24"
Shoulders - 18"
Length - 24 1/2"

The jacket is in worn, used condition but is still very wearable. It has some amazing fades and staining as well as a small period repair to the left armpit as illustrated in picture 6. The uppermost button is missing but a replacement could be sourced. Overall the jacket displays very wearable and has an amazing look to it which would be impossible to replicate. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A fantastic original US Navy Dungaree jacket with bags of character.
