Original WW2 British Army Officers Peaked Cap - Green Howards

Original WW2 British Army Officers Peaked Cap - Green Howards

Code: 55897

SOLD

An original British Army officer's peaked cap dating from the Second World War which belonged to an officer of the Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment).

This style of cap was particularly popular in the inter-war years and the first part of WW2. The cap features high sides and a fairly stiff crown as was popular before the friendly invasion of 1942 which helped bring more shaped, unstiffened 'crusher' caps into fashion. The cap features a 'duckbill' peak and an officer's pattern bronze Green Howards cap badge to the front. A leather chin strap is held onto the front of the cap by two OSD bronze General Service buttons.

The interior of the cap features a deep leather sweatband which is again a good indicator of early hats. Sweatbands became thinner during the war in line with wartime austerity measures and stayed this way post-war. The headband is marked with the maker's name of 'Lock & Co' who were a prestigious hat maker in Great Britain and are still in operation today. The interior of the crown is lined with a gold colour rayon material and features a large maker's label as are usually encountered on hats from this maker.

The cap is in excellent condition as can be seen in the pictures. It shows limited signs of wear and age and displays very well indeed. There are a couple of moth grazes to the top of the crown as well as some to the underside which are not visible when displayed (picture 8). There is also a short area of stitching between the sweatband and the cap illustrated in picture 9. This is only noticeable under close scrutiny and is not noticable when displayed.

A very nice example of a wartime infantry officer's cap from a prestigious maker!

A nice original cap in the sought-after early shape and in fantastic condition!
