SOLD

An original pair of 1956 dated British Denim Battledress Trousers in good condition and in a rare large size No. 11.

This pattern of trousers came into issue with the British Army during the Second World War and remained standard issue well into the 1950s. These trousers were used for fatigues and are made from a green denim sanforized cotton, typical of that used for workwear in the mid century period. Based on the serge battledress design, these trousers feature a map pocket to the left leg, a first field dressing pocket to the right hip and slash pockets in the usual place in each side seam. They are cut with a high rise and wide leg as were all men's clothes during this period.

The trousers still retain their original manufacturer's label to the interior. It states the size as No. 11 which is designed to fit someone a tall person with a 34" - 36" waist. The manufacturer's name of 'James Smith & Co. (Derby) Ltd' is present as is the 1956 date. The War Department broad arrow marking is also present.

It is important to remember that these are designed to fit over the wool battledress trousers so need to be worn oversize for an authentic fit. When laid flat they measure -

Waist - 19 1/2"
Rise - 19"
Rear rise - 19 1/2"
Inside leg - 35 1/2"
Outside leg - 52"
Cuff - 10"

The trousers are in excellent new old stock unworn condition. They have clearly never been worn or issued although there are a couple of loose threads along the inseam which is from the factory. Overall they are very clean and still very wearable. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that these are a pre-worn pair of vintage trousers with some small issues commensurate with age.

A very nice original pair of denim trousers in a large size and in very wearable condition.
