Original 1943 Dated RAF Khaki Drill Bush Jacket - Large Size 6

Code: 55907

SOLD

An original 1943 dated RAF 'Shirt Bush' as worn during the Second World War.

The bush jacket was a popular alternative to the more service dress style tunics and were worn by all three services. They were seen with the British Army as well as the RAF with identical examples carrying the label 'Shirt Bush RAF'. The shirt is made from cellular cotton which was a popular fabric for hot climates during the mid Century period due to its lightweight, breathable nature. This fabric is often referred to by the brand name 'Aertex'.

The jacket features a full button front, large collar and long sleeves. It is fitted with revolving shank buttons to the front and pocket whilst brown coloured vegetable ivory (plastic) buttons fasten the cuffs. Plain patch pockets are located to the chest which are typical of wartime austerity measures. The tunic also retains its original matching waist belt which is fitted with a brass buckle which is cast in one, suggesting that it is a theatre made example. Four press studs are fitted to each sleeve to which removable insignia would have previously been attached to.

Inside the tunic the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the title of 'Shirt Bush' below which is the size of 6. The maker's name as 'Red Rose Products Ltd' is also present which is a rare wartime manufacturer. The 1943 date is present as is the War Department broad arrow marking. Whilst the 3 at the end of the date almost looks like an 8 it is not. The New Pattern uniform had been introduced by 1948 meaning that if this was a post-war example it would have the N.P. designation in the title.

The tunic is a large size which is designed to fit a 42" - 44" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 24"
Waist (when belted) - 16 1/4"
Inside arm - 21 1/4"
Outside arm - 24 1/2"
Shoulders - 18"
Length - 32 1/2"

The overall condition of the tunic is good with some limited signs of wear or age. One of the revolving shank buttons has a crack in it as illustrated in picture 4. Overall it displays well and is totally wearable but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that It is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A good example of this pattern of wartime KD tunic in a hard to find larger size.
