An original British made woolen undershirt dating from 1941

This pattern of undershirt was produced in the early part of the Second World War and saw issue with the British Army and RAF. The most notable feature of this early pattern is the khaki coloured placket.

The construction of the undershirt is typical of the period. It is made from an oatmeal coloured wool which is machine made. It features a round neck and three button fastening which is often referred to as 'Henley' today. The front opening is made from khaki coloured brushed cotton which is very soft to the touch. It fastens with stamped zinc buttons of the style often found on early war manufactured shirts.

The original manufacturer's stamp is present to the front and bears the maker's name of 'Cooper & Roe Ltd' along with the 1941 date, War Department broad arrow and the size of 5. The name 'Warnorm' is also present. This is often found on wartime British woollen goods.

The top is a rare larger size which will suit someone of around a 44" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 22 1/2"
Shoulders - 23 1/2"
Length - 33"

The item is in good condition with signs of wear and use. There are however a number of small holes to various areas of the shirt which have been reflected in the price. There is also some staining so please study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a pre-worn vintage item which has small issues commensurate with age.

An early war original example with a clear date and in a rare large size.
