Original WW2 Royal Army Service Corps Officer's Field Service Cap

Original WW2 Royal Army Service Corps Officer's Field Service Cap

Code: 55475

SOLD

An original Royal Army Service Corps officer's coloured field service cap. This hat belonged to Major B D Ashton who was a member of the Royal Army Service Corps in the inter-war period and served throughout the Second World War. He was awarded the North Africa Star, Italy Star and France and Germany Star so he certainly saw some action.

This cap is a private purchase example and is therefore impossible to date exactly. The construction is typical of those made during the 1930s and 1940s as is the style of label found to the interior. It was made in Cairo which may suggest Ashton purchased it during the war as he has the Africa Star and may well have visited Cairo on leave. The hat is made from a dark blue coloured wool serge and features a white section inside the fold of the crown.

The interior is lined in a khaki colour cotton drill and the maker's label is still present. It bears the name of 'John Jones & Co (Egypt) Ltd, The English Tailors, Cairo' in typical period graphics.

The hat displays well on the whole but has suffered from some moth damage to the top which has been reflected in the price. When worn correctly this is not really visible.

An original example with a great label. The matching battledress set has also just been listed separately.
