A nice original 1940s men's overcoat made by 'Trent' as part of the CC41 utility clothing scheme.
The CC41 utility scheme which was brought into effect in the UK in 1941 as part of the larger rationing scheme. The idea behind it was that affordable, quality clothing would be available to everyone of every class and could be bought using coupons. The label is now deemed to be highly desirable by many collectors due to its wartime history.
The coat is made from a striking herringbone striped wool that has a slubby weave which gives it a flecked appearance. The silhouette is typical of the 1940s featuring a double breasted front with wide button stance, large patch pockets to the front and a pronounced lapel shape. All the buttons are a dark brown, almost black colour, which contrast nicely against the colour of the coat and give it a very 1940s feel.
The interior of the coat features a partial lining of grey coloured rayon and a single interior pocket. Below this is the original manufacturer's label which features typical 1940s graphics. The CC41 utility label is also present and confirms that the coat was made between 1931 and 1949.
The coat is designed to fit a 40" chest but and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 23 1/2"
Inside arm - 17 1/4"
Outside arm - 26"
Shoulders - 19"
Length - 46"
The coat is in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. There are some signs of wear and age but overall it displays well and is totally wearable. There is wear to the lining and a repair to the lining below the collar as illustrated in picture 9. The reverse of the pocket flaps also features a lining which is heavily worn although this is not noticeable when worn or displayed. It is a vintage, pre-owned item which has been worn so please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.
