An original British made Windproof Smock in a size 2 which was made by 'Black's of Greenock' during the 1950s.
These smocks were made by 'Blacks' for the civilian market during the 1950s and 1960s. This is an earlier example with the zip closure to the chest pocket rather than the velcro type seen later. It formed the basis of the British Army Cadet Smock issued in the 1970s and 1980s and is now considered a sought-after design classic.
The smock is made from a green coloured, tight weave cotton and features a large pocket to the centre of the chest two lower patch pockets which fasten with buttons. The hood gusset features a short 'Aero' branded zipper which is typical of the period. The original drawstrings are present to the waist and inside the sleeve there is an elasticated storm cuff.
Inside the smock the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the maker's name of 'Black's' in the classic gold text on black field graphics used by the company during this period.
The smock is a medium size which will fit up to a 40" chest and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 24"
Inside arm - 22"
Outside arm - 25"
Length - 32"
Shoulders - 22"
The overall condition of the smock is good with signs of wear and use. There are no serious damage or flaws but plenty of signs of wear and use as can be seen in the pictures. Overall it is very wearable but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
A good example of a rare and desirable pattern of smock!
