A nice original 1940s men's overcoat which was made by ‘J. Hepworth’s & Son Ltd’.
The coat is typical of the 1940s featuring a double breasted front with wide button stance, large patch pockets to the front and a waist belt which is made from matching material. The leather covered metal buckle which is typical of the era as are the contrasting brown coloured buttons. The coat is made from a deep umber brown coloured wool which is a rare colour to find.
The interior of the coat features a partial lining of grey coloured rayon which is less common to find on British coats from this period than a full lining. There is a single interior pocket below which is the makers label. It’s bears the maker’s name of ‘J. Hepworth & Son Ltd’ which predates the more simple ‘Hepworths’ label employed later in the 1940s. This would suggest the coat was made in the first half of the 1940s or possibly in the late 1930s.
The coat will fit up to a 38" chest with ease due to being cut in a loose, over-size manner and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 211/2"
Inside arm - 18 1/2"
Outside arm - 27"
Shoulders - 17"
Length - 46"
The coat is in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. There are signs of wear and use but overall it is very wearable and displays well. There is a hole to the front below the buttons which is illustrated in pictures 5 and some wear to the leather belt buckle. There is also wear to the lining as illustrated in the last picture. It is a vintage, pre-owned item which has been worn so please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.
A nice original British overcoat which shows signs of age but is still totally wearable and priced to reflect this.
