An original Belstaff Dalesman smock dating from the 1960s and in worn condition.

This is arguably one of the most iconic British smocks ever made. The design is truly classic being simple with subtle details. Designed as an outer garment for walking, climbing, mountaineering and other outdoor pursuits with function being crucial. This is a very early example from the 1950s as is denoted by the label which makes it particularly rare.

The smock is made from a grey coloured cotton gabardine and is fully lined with a grey-green coloured twill which is one of the distinguishing features of the 'Dalesman'. A large pocket is located to the chest, the flap of which fastens with buttons. Under the flap is a 'Lightning' branded zipper which is marked with the letter L. Two more pockets are located to the skirt and fasten with buttons. A hood is also present, the bottom of which fastens with another Lightning branded zipper. Inside the smock is a strap which can be fastened between the wearer's legs in adverse weather conditions. The original drawstrings are present to the hood and waist and retain their original plastic stoppers.

Inside the smock the original label is still present and is the style used in the 1940s and 1950s. It bears the maker's name of 'Belstaff Regd. Casual Wear' and features typical period graphics.

There is no size indicated but due to the cut it will fit a few chest sizes around a 36" chest. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 22 3/4"
Inside arm - 20"
Outside arm - 24 1/2"
Shoulders - 18"
Length - 28 1/2"

The smock is in well worn condition but is still wearable. There are various stains and marks all of which add to the unique character of the smock. There is a small tear to the outer layer of fabric below the left armpit at the front of the smock. This is not a hole as there is another layer of fabric underneath. Please study the pictures carefully before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage and well worn item which has some flaws and signs of age and wear.

A very hard to find early example of one of the most iconic and influential designs of smock to ever come out of the UK and a must have for the serious vintage collector!
