An original American suit which was made in 1949 by 'Walmart Tailors' for the wrestler Buddy Rogers.
Buddy Rogers was a famous wrestler who started his career in 1939 and was 14 time world champion. He was born Herman Gustav Rohde Jr and had different ring names including Dutch Rogers and Herman Rohde. The name in the suit is interesting as it is yet another version of 'Dutch Rohde'. The suit was tailored in his home town of Camden, New Jersey.
This suit is cut in a very distinctive manner which is known as 'Bold Look'. This slouchy, dramatic style of clothing became very popular in America in the immediate post-war period. The style clearly takes its influence from the 'Zoot Suit' and reflects the feeling of the late 1940s. Many men were returning home from war and wanted a new look which was different to pre-war norms.
The suit is made from a midnight blue coloured wool rayon blend which is typical of the period. The jacket features a double breast 4x1 front fastening and the peaked lapels are notably wide, as are the shoulders. These are two of the most obvious 'Bold Look' features. The jacket features no rear vent which is a typical 1940s attribute and the interior features a partial rayon lining. The original label is fitted below one of the two interior pockets. It bears the maker's name of 'Walmart Tailors' and the address of 1209 Broadway, Camden, N.J. These details are repeated on a second label found inside the interior pocket. The owner's name of 'Dutch Rohoe' is present as is the 1949 date.
The trousers are typical of this look with a pegged leg, hollywood waist and dropped belt loops at the waist. The fly fastens with a 'Talon' branded metal zipper and turn ups are located to each cuff. Slask pockets are located to the hips and two pockets can be found to the seat.
The suit is cut in an oversize manner and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 26"
Inside arm - 17"
Outside arm - 25 3/4"
Shoulders - 22 1/2"
Length at rear 34"
Waist - 18 1/2"
Rise - 16 1/2"
Rear rise - 19 1/2"
Inside leg - 30"
Outside leg - 44 1/2"
Cuff - 8 1/2"
The suit is in good condition with some signs of wear and age. There are no serious flaws or damage but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn suit which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
A striking suit with a famous owner!
