A scarce original 1940s men's collared sports shirt complete with its original CC41 label.
This shirt was made as part of the CC41 utility scheme which was brought into effect in the UK in 1941 as part of the larger rationing scheme. The idea behind it was that affordable, quality clothing would be available to everyone of every class and could be bought using coupons.
The shirt is typical of those made and worn during the 1940s for leisure and sporting pursuits. It is made from a soft white coloured brushed cotton and is of half placket design, which is pulled on over the head. The shirt features a nice spearpoint collar shape, typical of the era along with a barrel cuff.
Inside the shirt the original label is still present and it incorporates the CC41 Utility logo into it which would suggest this is a reasonably early shirt rather than a late 1940s shirt. It bears the maker's name of 'Meritus Brand' along with the words 'Shirt and Pyjamas' and typical period graphics.
The shirt will suit around a 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures -
Chest - 22 1/2"
Inside arm - 20""
Outside arm - 23"
Shoulders - 18 1/2"
Length at back - 36 1/2"
Collar - 15 1/2"
It is important to remember that these shirts are cut very wide across the chest to allow them to be pulled on over the head so the true fit will be much smaller than the chest measurement provided.
The shirt is in excellent condition with only very limited signs of previous wear and age. Overall it displays extremely well but is of course a vintage item so may have small issues commensurate with age.
All in all a fantastic original 1940s sports shirt with great details and the all important utility label. This would make a great addition to any collection or wardrobe without a doubt!
