A rare original men's two piece linen suit made during the 1940s which is in good condition.

Linen suits became popular during the late Victorian period with men who were spending time in hot climates overseas and were a common choice for the English gentleman abroad. Often paired with a panama hat or similar, this style of suit is quintessentially English with original vintage examples being very rare to find today. This example dates from the late 1940s and is typical of the period in cut and construction.

The jacket features a single breasted, three button front which fastens with removable revolving shank buttons, often referred to as 'bachelor' buttons. This style of buttons were popular on clothing worn in hot climates as they could easily be removed for laundering purposes. The pronounced notch lapel, short 'bum freezer' length and lack of any rear vents are also common traits of jackets from this period. The jacket features flapped pockets to the skirt and an angled breast pocket to the left side of the chest. The inside of the jacket is unlined and there are two interior pockets.

The trousers are again a classic example of 1940s British tailoring. They feature a high rise waist, wide leg with turn up to the cuff and a button fly. The front of the trousers feature twin pleats and angled slash pockets are found at each hip. Of particular note is the addition of a separate waistband as well as this there are waist adjusters fitted to each hip. This style of adjustment was first seen in the 1940s and features two fabric ears which are joined by a piece of elastic inside the trousers. There is also a single rear pocket which is another typical trait of British suits from this period.

The suit will fit someone of around a 40" chest and 34" waist depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Jacket
Chest - 22"
Inside arm - 18 1/2"
Outside arm - 25 1/2"
Shoulders - 18 1/4"
Length - 31"

Trousers
Waist - 17"
Rise - 14 1/2"
Rear rise - 17 1/2"
Inside leg - 33 1/2"
Outside leg - 46"
Cuff - 10 1/2"

The suit is in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. There are no signs of serious damage or undue wear that I can find and overall it presents extremely well with some signs of use etc. There are some light marks etc as illustrated in the pictures which are to be expected for a suit of this vintage. This is a vintage, pre-worn suit which is over 70 years old and may therefore have small issues commensurate with age. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.

A fantastic and very rare period suit in nice condition. This would make a brilliant addition to any wardrobe!
